Fiction is formative.
There are many examples of ideas in science fiction preceding developments in science and technology. Many more examples of popular fiction influencing society and culture. These influences can be for better or worse.
Fiction can provide a sandbox for examining concepts in new ways but depending on how the story is presented, the overall message can vary. When the intention is to entertain the themes and tone favor drama but what if the intention is to inspire?
✏ Can well crafted fiction guide the shape and direction of cultural change?
The future isn't just the realm of science fiction, there are people who think about the future professionally.
Whether they call it futurism, strategic foresight or something else - the approach is as methodical as it is creative. They utilize research and analysis to understand what is happening now and extrapolate that into future situations.
The techniques that futurists use can be adapted by fiction writers to craft more realistic portrays of the future.
💡 Just ask, if fiction is going to be influential on society, shouldn't it be beneficial rather than fear and doom.
📚 The intention of Schemata Lux is to bring together the methodical approach of futurism with the creativity of fiction to inspire and guide our culture in these uncertain times.
🤝 We also intend to create a community of thinkers and writers who can examine the past and present to reflect upon the future. The conversations that we have today shape the world we see tomorrow.
